Early 1900s St. Louis Exposition novelty studio cabinet card featuring an alligator hunting scene. Handwritten on the back: "Mother - Jessie Hyatt Wood & her brother Lewis Wetzel Wood, St. Louis Exposition." Likely a novelty studio photograph, with prop taxidermy alligators, taken at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
These studios at the World's Fair offered backdrops, props (like gators or fake big-game scenes), and costumes to help visitors pose in ways that looked exotic, adventurous, or regionally “authentic.” It’s very possible they posed with alligators to represent or play up their Southern identity, especially if they were from Florida, Louisiana, or another southern state known for alligators and swamp culture.
